Congratulations to everyone who has got a place at York and further congratulations to everyone that has got a place at the best college in York! We have set up a dedicated fresher mini-site for all new students to check out at:

    http://freshers.goodricke.co.uk

On it, theres a discussion board so that you can meet other students living in your flat and block and there is also a space for you to start discussions or get any of your burning questions answered. There is also a FAQ section which should answer some basic questions for you but feel free to ask on the discussion board if not and it should get answered soon.

Congratulations again, and Goodricke looks forward to seeing you in October for Freshers Week!

    Hi there!

Going to university is usually either a terrifying prospect, or one you can’t wait for - or a mixture of the two. This was the case for me, as despite loving my family very much, I had recently come out, and I was ready to set-up roots somewhere else, to continue discovering my own sexual identity.

Being gay - or having any sexual or gender identity that marks you as ‘different’ - can cause you pain and embarrassment in social circumstances throughout your life. That’s the bad news - the good news is that, much of this pain and embarrassment is created in your head. And, whilst it’s totally natural to feel shy or embarrassed about being ‘different’, coming to university can be a wonderful and liberating experience, because it teaches you that everyone, absolutely everyone, is different too! Being different is the only thing we all have in common!

To that end, your sexuality can be as big a part of you as you want it to be at university. If you want to dabble in its politics and meet like-minded people, you can join the student’s union’s LGBT (Lesbian Gay Bi Trans) society, or contact the LGBT officers at lgbt@yusu.org - alternatively, if you just want to be who you are without attaching any labels or politics or stereotypes to your identity, you’ll most likely find that there’s no one who’ll stop you. Personally, I chose to jump right in with YUSU LGBT and LGBT Social, but I’ve gotten to know many LGBT students who prefer being who they are and having nothing to do with these societies - my boyfriend being one of them. University is an accepting environment, and the whole experience is really about finding out who you are, and who you’d like to be.

This isn’t to say you’ll never encounter problems because of your sexuality. Given everything I’ve written, I must say that I have personally never had problems and that such incidents are rare, but they do occur, and you should be warned and prepared. Oftentimes, this is when your college comes in. Goodricke has a welfare team who can be contacted at all hours, and who will strive to make sure you feel safe and accepted, no matter what. In this guide, you’ll be able to find all the contact details you need to get in touch with the team, but for lgbt-specific issues, you can email:

lgbt@yusu.org to get the university’s LGBT officers, or:

lgbt@goodricke.co.uk to get your college’s LGBT Rep.

For more information, please check out the university’s page for LGBT or LGBT-curious students: www.yusu.org/LGBT

I hope you are looking forward to coming to York, and that you have a fantastic experience when you get here,

    Tom Martin
