It is literally some of –if not THE- best accommodation on campus. It’s broken up into 3 “courts” which are a mixture of different blocks of flats and houses. There are single rooms, shared rooms and studio flats.
All Goodricke beds are extra long singles. Note: these will still fit a normal sized bottom sheet. Studio Flats may have a double bed.
When you apply to Goodricke, you will automatically be placed in one of the 65 flats/houses based on whether you have chosen ensuite or shared facilities. You will be sharing your flat or house with 6-12 people. The smaller flats and houses share facilities and the bigger flats are the ensuites. In shared facilities, there are enough showers/toilets so that you will normally never been sharing with more than 3 or 4 people.
All of Goodricke is self catering. The kitchens are MASSIVE and all come with enough ovens, hobs, grills, fridge, toasters, kettles and microwaves for the amount of people sharing the flat/house. (See the 360 pictures and the video tour for more info!)
It works out to be that you get two cupboards in the kitchen each: a bigger bottom one and a smaller top one. Plenty of room for pots and pans and lots of food too! Also, you get a shelf in the fridge and a drawer in the freezer each too.
Nope! Cleaners come once a week and clean the corridors and kitchens. All they ask is that you do your washing up and put things away before they come. They will remind you each week of your cleaning day so you and your flat can make sure that things are ready. If your stuff is away and they can clean easily then you will get a green rating for that week. The flats with the most green ratings at the end of the term get entered into a draw and could be in with a chance of winning a takeaway for the whole flat… FREE! So make sure you do your washing up! :)
You do get a hoover, ironing board, mop and bucket per flat/house for any emergencies though.
Ensuites get cleaned once a month but many people like to bring their own cleaning products for cleaning between that time. Please note that bleach is strictly not allowed to be used in Goodricke toilets as it reacts badly to the type of cleaning products that the cleaning staff use.
The rest of your room is your responsibility though. Each flat/house has their own Henry Hoover so you are free to clean your room as you wish.
International students can buy a bedding bundle at the beginning of term which consists of a duvet and pillow but will need to buy their own covers to go on this.
For everyone else, bedding is not provided. You will need to bring a pillow, duvet and the relevant covers to go on these.
Mini fridges, fairy lights, candles (even if they are just for ornamental use), incense, curtains and matches are not allowed for fire safety reasons.
Note: every room has curtains/blinds provided that comply with fire safety regulations. Therefore, you are not allowed to change these.
If you have any doubts about if you are allowed to bring a certain item, email Goodricke and we will be happy to advise/find out for you.
When you arrive at Goodricke you will be given a keycard. This allows you to gain access to your block and any flat within it. This means that you can go and visit your friends easily and they do not have to come down and let you if they live on the top floor for example.
However, your key card is the only key that can access your room so your belongings will be safe.
Also, only people that live in your flat can access your shared kitchen. This means that all of your food and kitchen belongings are safe.
Your key card does not let you into any of the other two blocks/houses associated with any other blocks. If you have a friend in another block then they will either have to come and let you in or you can dial up to a phone in their flat and they can “buzz” you in, like real flats.
If you lose your keycard, you can buy another one from the porters.
Similarly, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will leave your keycard in your room when you nip to kitchen or a friends room. Goodricke room doors lock automatically when they close meaning that you will have to take a nice little walk down to the porters office to get a temporary card. Moral of the story… don’t leave your room without your key!
Your keycard also gets you access to the bike sheds, the common room and the laundry room.
These are your first port of call with any problem you may have. If they cannot sort it for you, then they will at least know who can.
For example, visit/call them if: you lock yourself out, something breaks, something doesn’t work, you/someone you know needs first aid, you get lost, someone’s making too much noise etc.
They are all very nice and will try and help you in the best way that they can.
Each flat/house has a letter box by its main entrance. The postman will put anything that fits and does not need a signature in there for you and you will have a key to access it. Anything that needs a signature or is too big for the letter box gets delivered to the Porters.
This means that you do not have to worry about being in when that important textbook or equally important new pair of shoes get delivered as the porters have it covered.
Once delivered, you can check the online or paper copy (displayed near the porters office) of the post list to see if you need to collect anything. If you have something waiting for you, all you need to do is sign for your item and show your photographic student ID and you are all sorted.
This means that all post is securely held until you collect it.

Everyone is free to bring a bike to Goodricke with them. Goodricke has secure bike stores built into the ground floor of each block (anyone in a shared house can access their nearest block store). These stores can only be accessed with Goodricke keycards and are covered by CCTV. Furthermore, there are bike racks just outside each of the entrances to the blocks, houses and nucleus.
Check the “Facilities” link for more information.
Unfortunately, only disabled members of the college are allowed to bring cars with them. This is becuase there is simply not enough parking spaces for everyone to be able to bring a car. There are, however, short stay parking spaces for when parents come to collect you/drop you off and for deliveries.
