Marrow, (the student arm of Anthony Nolan) are running a recruitment event in the GCR on Saturday 14th January from 13:00 - 16:00 so come along and GIVE A SPIT!
Every 23 minutes, someone in the UK is diagnosed with a blood cancer such as leukaemia. For many of these people, their only chance of life isa blood stem cell (or bone marrow) transplant.
Anthony Nolan is a pioneering charity that helps save the lives of people with blood cancer by matching them with potential donors from their register. These potential donors are remarkable people who are willing to give up their time to donate their blood stem cells to help save the life of someone with blood cancer.
It's really simple to join the register and anyone can, so long as they are over 18 and are going to be in the UK for 3 years or more. All you have to do is come along to a recruitment event, fill in a form and then, so long as you pass the medical criteria, spit in a tube. This saliva sample is all that we need, just don't eat, drink anything (even water), smoke or chew gum for 30 minutes before you come along.
The criteria are different from blood donation so even if you've been turned down for giving blood, you may still be able to join.
Come down to Market Square on Friday 13th of January 10:00-15:00 to the Good Food Market where you can buy delicious cakes and soup for lunch, local meat and vegetables for the weekend, flour, bread and crafts. A great chance to meet the producers, support local businesses and stock up on good food for the weekend!
That's it from me this week, enjoy your weekend everybody!

Nick Clegg (the leader of the Liberal Democratic party and currently the Deputy Prime Minister of the UK), has a Master's Degree in European studies.
(In fact he has some European connections: He is multilingual, and speaks English, Dutch, French, German, and Spanish. He also spent agap year working as a ski instructor in Austria, and when he was 16 he served a community service sentence in Germany, when on an exchange trip in Munich, he and a friend got drunk and set fire to two greenhouses full of exotic plants.
Dear all,
I hope you all had a fabulous break and are looking forward to starting your next term. It's been too quiet over here so I am looking forward to seeing you all return over the weekend sporting your new Christmas jumpers.
Mel Fox from YUSU is here every Monday from 3-6pm in the meetingroom in the Goodricke Nucleus to give advice and discuss anything student related. Please drop in even just to say hello, I'm sure Mel would love to see a friendly face!
There may be some job opportunities coming up within college forstudents if you are interested in earning a few extra pennies. If you areinterested, please pop into the admin office and register your interest.
Are you a student volunteer? Are you enthusiastic about helping others and encouraging others to do so?
Your Local Link magazine is hoping to celebrate National Student Volunteering Week (20-26 of February) by highlighting several students from the University of York and profiling them within our magazine. We'd like to know why you're interested in volunteering, how you got involved, and what projects you're actively supporting.
Please note that we're only looking for students who volunteer in and around York itself, rather than volunteering within the university or for one-off fundraising. We'd like to let all of York's residents realise that students really are doing some brilliant work to make life in York brighter. Don't be modest - we're especially interested in unsung heroes!
If you're interested in talking about your voluntary work and being profiled, please contact Joe Burnham at Joe@Yourlocallink.co.uk or call 01904 767881. If you're chosen to be profiled you'll need to provide a picture for the magazine.
Our deadline is Jan 12th, but (due to time restrictions) we'll put priority on students who contact us earlier.
Enjoy your last couple of days break and I wish you all safe journeys back to college and I will look forward to seeing you soon.

In Catalonia, one Christmas tradition is the 'Caga Tió', or 'pooping log' a hollow log with a face who must be 'fed' for weeks, then beaten witha stick on Christmas Day to make it excrete small food gifts.
