Hi, I’m Josie, your LGBT Officer!
University can be a daunting experience for all of us at some point, but perhaps particularly for anyone who feels different in any way, including those who identify as LGBT. But it is true that you are definitely in the best college in York and really have nothing to worry about. I live on campus, so I’m always around for a chat but if there is anything in particular that you’d like to talk about, my email is lgbt@goodricke.co.uk , feel free to message me whenever about whatever, nothing is too big/small/silly/serious etc :)
Other safe spaces for a chat or to find out more information about just what kind of services are out there for you include the frequent drop-in sessions Goodricke Welfare Officers and Vice-Chair are running. These sessions are open for ANYONE to come and talk about any problems they might be facing or just for a friendly and informal chat, they’re generally advertised the week before they happen.
York Uni has a great LGBT community, with a very active YUSU LGBT, they are contactable on lgbt@yusu.org and have an informative page on the YUSU website . Or on the more fun side we have LGBT Social who organise a variety of great events. Currently they run bar crawls in York every Friday ending at the LGBT night at Vanity, however there are always trips planned to other cities, such as Manchester, Leeds and Newcastle for bigger nights out.
If you do find you have any issues whilst at university remember there are so many people here to support you, your JCRC Welfare officers, the college welfare team, YUSU LGBT, nightline, the open door team and of course myself! Please never feel like you’re on your own with a problem/issue.
And of course, don’t forget that you can get FREE sexual health supplies (condoms, lube, postal chlamydia tests, pregnancy test, dental dams etc.) from us, the Welfare Officers or in the YUSU Advice and Support Centre.
